GULMAKAI M. SARVAR


President of The Afghan Society of Halifax

Founder and Community Leader

Gulmakai M. Sarvar is an Afghan-Canadian entrepreneur, community leader, and the founder of the Afghan Society of Halifax. She immigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2005. She holds a diploma in Accounting from Maritime Business College and also studied Business Management at Saint Mary's University in Halifax. In 2008, she established a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Afghan community. Since 2014, she has been actively operating the Afghan Society of Halifax and has worked for more than 18 years to serve and

strengthen her community.


Gulmakai has dedicated her knowledge, career, and education to bringing the Afghan community together through cultural events, community activities, and educational programs. Her leadership has helped build a strong and supportive Afghan community in Nova Scotia. After the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, Gulmakai focused her efforts on sponsoring Afghan refugees and helping them resettle in Canada. Through the Afghan Society of Halifax, she has worked tirelessly to support refugee families and individuals as they begin new lives in Canada. Since 2022, she has submitted applications to sponsor more than 100 Afghan refugees through Canada's community sponsorship programs. In 2026, the Afghan Society of Halifax became a well-recognized charitable organization dedicated to helping Afghan refugees and supporting their successful integration into Canadian society.


Gulmakai takes great pride in helping relieve poverty and supporting refugee families as they rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.
